Strange Creatures in the Mango Farm

My cousins enjoyed our trip to the province Nueva Ecija in the town of San Antonio where our folks live. And there we heard of strange creatures roaming around. One of them is the half man beast (manananggal) which is similar to a vampire but separates from half of it's body.

And these ones appear when there is a bright

How Summer Was Spent in Manila During the 60's

During school vacations my parents allowed us to spend the summer at our Lolo's (grandfather) residence. Well, my grandfather wasn't the only one living there. My grandmother, their children who were my aunts and uncles and their children who were my cousins. There were many people in the house. This was in Navotas about 15 minutes away from where we live in Manila.

I had lots of fun because I spend time playing with my cousins. We were sort of a big clan. My grandfather runs a motor repair shop close to the bay to repair fisherman's boat motors. His workers were my uncles and another kid that lives across the street. He was the only one who wasn't blood but he was treated like one.

We adventured to many spots in that place like biking around a big church. We play sword fights, martial arts, taking care of chickens and even working in the shop.

In memory of my cousin Bobby (Odulio) Aquino

A Mango Plantation Story

The song "Silent River" was inspired by a lone stream in Acadia National Park in Bar Harbor, Maine. But my childhood days was also filled with adventures back in the Philippines. As a little kid my grandfather, Juan takes me, my brother and my other cousins to their home town up north in Nueva Ecija to visit folks and get away from the big city. The place was remote, no electricity. We get water from hand pump wells and cook our food using firewood outside the house. It was like the ultimate day camp. The place was scenic with a view of a mountain and a river to the east of a mango orchard.  The orchard was really acres huge, we had to ride a tricycle (three wheeled motorcycle with a sidecar) to get to the other end.

To go across the river to get to the other side of the delta, we can either ride a raft made of bamboo or use the bridge which was also made of bamboo. Lolo Juan (grandfather) owns a boat and we use that to ride along the strong currents of the river. We were not allowed to go to the mango orchard. My grandparents told us legends (old time superstitions) that dwarves living in the ground has ownerships of the orchard and that they can cast a curse to anyone lurking around the plantation.

Of course me, my brother and my cousins were curious about these creatures, dwarves, flying half bodied demons and giants living on the trees. So we planned to sneak out of our beds one evening when everbody has fallen really asleep to look for these creatures. The moon was really bright in the middle of the night. Did we find any?
